How are you Girls?


Hope you are doing well in studying;)


Here are the definitions


In order to save time study


since I looked for them
Very Happy






1-Assonance:
The repetition of vowel sounds in a literary work, especially in a poem.

OR: The repetition of similar vowel sounds in Poetry.


2-Allusion: A reference to a familiar literary or historical person or event, used to make an idea more easily understood.

3-Alliteration: A poetic device where the first consonant sounds or any vowel sounds in words or syllables are repeated.

4-Auditory image: Descriptive language that evokes noise, music, or other sounds.

5-Concrete poetry: A poem that visually resembles something found in the physical world.

6-Connotation: The connotation of a word is its emotional content. In this sense, the word wall can also mean an attitude or actions which prevent becoming emotionally close to a person.

OR:

The extra tinge or taint of meaning each word carries beyond the minimal, strict definition found in a dictionary.

7-Consonance: The repetition of consonant sounds with differing vowel sounds in words near each other in a line or lines of poetry.

8-Dramatic irony: Occurs when the audience of a play or the reader of a work of literature knows something that a character in the work itself does not know.

9-Denotation: The denotation of a word is its dictionary definition. The word wall, therefore, denotes an upright structure which encloses something or serves as a boundary.

10-Dramatic poetry: a poem written entirely (or mostly) in dialogue, such as Robert Frost’s “The Death of the Hired Man.” In a broader sense, the term refers to a play written entirely or mostly in verse, like Oedipus Rex or Shakespeare’s plays.

OR: a poem is written entirely or mostly in dialogue.



11-Elegy: A lyric poem lamenting death.









12-Epic: In poetry, a long work dealing with the actions of gods and heroes. John Milton's "Paradise Lost" is a book length epic poem consisting of twelve subdivisions called books.

13-Free verse: poetry in an open form, without rhyme and meter.
14-Gustatory image: Imagery dealing with taste.

15-Homophone: same sound, it concern about sounds not letters and if words share a homophonic relationship it means that they share sound in common.


16-Imagery: A word or group of words in a literary work which appeal to one or more of the senses: sight, taste, touch, hearing, and smell. The use of images serves to intensify the impact of the work.

17-Lyric poetry: A short poem wherein the poet expresses an emotion or illuminates some life principle.

OR: It is a short poem that is neither dramatic nor narrative. It expresses thoughts and feelings and describes sth.

18-Metaphor: A figure of speech wherein a comparison is made between two unlike quantities without the use of the words "like" or "as."

19-Narrative poetry: A poem which tells a story. Usually a long poem, sometimes even book length, the narrative may take the form of a plotless dialogue as in Robert Frost's "The Death of the Hired Man." In other instances the narrative may consist of a series of incidents, as in John Milton's "Paradise Lost."


OR: Poem that tells a story.


20-Onomatopoeia: A literary device wherein the sound of a word echoes the sound it represents.

OR: the word sounds as what it means.


21-Olfactory image: Imagery dealing with scent.

OR: image made by the author referring to smell.







22-Ode: A poem in praise of something divine or expressing some noble idea.

OR: An ode is a poem that is written for an occasion or on a particular subject. They are usually dignified and more serious as a form than other forms of poetry.


23-Personification: A figure of speech in which something nonhuman is given human characteristics.

OR: A figure of speech in which human characteristics are attributed to an abstract quality, animal or inanimate object.


24-Rhyme: In poetry, a pattern of repeated sounds. In end rhyme, the rhyme is at the end of the line.

OR: The similarity between syllable sounds at the end of two or more lines.


25-Refrain: A line or set of lines at the end of a stanza or section of a longer poem or song--these lines repeat at regular intervals in other stanzas or sections of the same work.

[color=indigo]26-Situational Irony:It is a contradiction between the intention (expectations) and the result.

27-Simile: A figure of speech which takes the form of a comparison between two unlike quantities for which a basis for comparison can be found, and which uses the words "like" or "as" in the comparison.

28-Symbol: device in literature where an object represents an idea.
an object, sign, or image that is used to stand for something else,


29-Tone: The writer's attitude toward his readers and his subject; his mood or moral view. A writer can be formal, informal, playful, ironic, and especially, optimistic or pessimistic.

30-Tactile image: Verbal description that evokes the sense of touch.

31-Turn (Volta): Also called a volta, a turn is a sudden change in thought, direction, or emotion at the conclusion of the sonnet.

32-Visual image: Imagery that invokes colors, shapes, or things that can be seen.

33-Verbal Irony: the rhetorical use of language to mean the opposite of what is expressed.

OR: It is when the author \ poet plays with words. He says something while he means another thing.

Free verse: a Kind of a poetry that does not conform to any regular meter, the length of its lines is irrgular.

Oxford dictionary.
