How are you Girls?
Hope you are doing well in studying;)
Here are the definitions
In order to save time
since I looked for them 1-Assonance: The repetition of vowel sounds in a literary work, especially in a poem. OR: The repetition of similar vowel sounds in Poetry.2-Allusion: A reference to a familiar literary or historical person or event, used to make an idea more easily understood.3-Alliteration: A poetic device where the first consonant sounds or any vowel sounds in words or syllables are repeated.4-Auditory image: Descriptive language that evokes noise, music, or other sounds.5-Concrete poetry: A poem that visually resembles something found in the physical world. 6-Connotation: The connotation of a word is its emotional content. In this sense, the word wall can also mean an attitude or actions which prevent becoming emotionally close to a person. OR:The extra tinge or taint of meaning each word carries beyond the minimal, strict definition found in a dictionary.7-Consonance: The repetition of consonant sounds with differing vowel sounds in words near each other in a line or lines of poetry.8-Dramatic irony: Occurs when the audience of a play or the reader of a work of literature knows something that a character in the work itself does not know.9-Denotation: The denotation of a word is its dictionary definition. The word wall, therefore, denotes an upright structure which encloses something or serves as a boundary.10-Dramatic poetry: a poem written entirely (or mostly) in dialogue, such as Robert Frost’s “The Death of the Hired Man.” In a broader sense, the term refers to a play written entirely or mostly in verse, like Oedipus Rex or Shakespeare’s plays.OR: a poem is written entirely or mostly in dialogue.11-Elegy: A lyric poem lamenting death.12-Epic: In poetry, a long work dealing with the actions of gods and heroes. John Milton's "Paradise Lost" is a book length epic poem consisting of twelve subdivisions called books.13-Free verse: poetry in an open form, without rhyme and meter.14-Gustatory image: Imagery dealing with taste.15-Homophone: same sound, it concern about sounds not letters and if words share a homophonic relationship it means that they share sound in common. 16-Imagery: A word or group of words in a literary work which appeal to one or more of the senses: sight, taste, touch, hearing, and smell. The use of images serves to intensify the impact of the work.17-Lyric poetry: A short poem wherein the poet expresses an emotion or illuminates some life principle.OR: It is a short poem that is neither dramatic nor narrative. It expresses thoughts and feelings and describes sth.18-Metaphor: A figure of speech wherein a comparison is made between two unlike quantities without the use of the words "like" or "as."19-Narrative poetry: A poem which tells a story. Usually a long poem, sometimes even book length, the narrative may take the form of a plotless dialogue as in Robert Frost's "The Death of the Hired Man." In other instances the narrative may consist of a series of incidents, as in John Milton's "Paradise Lost."OR: Poem that tells a story.20-Onomatopoeia: A literary device wherein the sound of a word echoes the sound it represents.OR: the word sounds as what it means.21-Olfactory image: Imagery dealing with scent.OR: image made by the author referring to smell.22-Ode: A poem in praise of something divine or expressing some noble idea.OR: An ode is a poem that is written for an occasion or on a particular subject. They are usually dignified and more serious as a form than other forms of poetry.23-Personification: A figure of speech in which something nonhuman is given human characteristics.OR: A figure of speech in which human characteristics are attributed to an abstract quality, animal or inanimate object.24-Rhyme: In poetry, a pattern of repeated sounds. In end rhyme, the rhyme is at the end of the line. OR: The similarity between syllable sounds at the end of two or more lines. 25-Refrain: A line or set of lines at the end of a stanza or section of a longer poem or song--these lines repeat at regular intervals in other stanzas or sections of the same work.[color=indigo]26-Situational Irony: It is a contradiction between the intention (expectations) and the result.27-Simile: A figure of speech which takes the form of a comparison between two unlike quantities for which a basis for comparison can be found, and which uses the words "like" or "as" in the comparison.28-Symbol: device in literature where an object represents an idea. an object, sign, or image that is used to stand for something else,29-Tone: The writer's attitude toward his readers and his subject; his mood or moral view.
