Hello ... flower

This poem " Prayer before Birth " by Louis MacNeice, is a suffering cry from the mouth of an unborn child. He talks about what happens around him and his feeling about it. It talks about child's suffering by evil war. How can he sees bloodsucking , rat , stoat or the ghoul . Because of his childhood he has to see happy things like, grass ,trees , sky ,birds and a white light . In his age it is natural to play and doesn`t care about anything . It expresses how the world's tyranny can kill the innocence of a child . How would they freeze his humanity . Living is a painful experience. It makes him seeking protection from God and he asks for forgiveness for all the deeds of evil . The poem makes a sweeping statement on the deplorable state of the world . And how he prefers to die rather than live in this dark world. Also, it`s reflects the poet's utter dejection and hopelessness, expressing the thought that the world will not correct itself.

Hello Mrs.Ouhod
and hello girls ,
I hope that everyone enjoyed their vacation Smile
This is my analysis for the poem ..

“Prayer Before Birth “ is a poem written by Louis MacNeice in 20th century during the World War II. It talks about unborn baby who asks for protection and safe. This unborn baby wants to be far from many dangerous things and to be protected by many things. The poem contains many symbols that stand for unexpected things that give the poem deep wise meaning which uncover the cleverness of MacNeice. This unborn baby send a message to people asking them to get back to romanticism era when people car about love not hate and peace not war. When people were looking for reasons to love each other not excuses to kill each other. Because this era came after a hard time which was full of wars and blood, people appreciate this calm quite time and they get back to nature..love..peace and humanity. after this peaceful time, the world wars came to refresh the blood smell..the red color..the salty tears and the sharp mourning.

I am not yet born; O hear me.
Let not the bloodsucking bat or the rat or the stoat or the
club-footed ghoul come near me.

animals have been symbols of people for along time...ugly wild animals stand for bad aggressive people..here these mammals stand for people who calling for wars..racism..abusing things...here the unborn baby asking for keeping him away from such kinds of people

I am not yet born, console me.
I fear that the human race may with tall walls wall me,
with strong drugs dope me, with wise lies lure me,
on black racks rack me, in blood-baths roll me.

I'm the pure white angel and I do not any abusing to my soul..all human bad actions and abusing of their white souls are the reasons of this war and this bloody time..racism,lies,wars,and betraying are locking my free soul in this bad world

I am not yet born; provide me
With water to dandle me, grass to grow for me, trees to talk
to me, sky to sing to me, birds and a white light
in the back of my mind to guide me.

I'm the seeker of humanism asking you to wash my soul with rain..to color my life with flower..to have a melody in my life from birds twittering.. to lighten my nights with the white light that comes from the shiny honest souls and pure white birds that dancing on the skies celebrating the peace of the world

I am not yet born; forgive me
For the sins that in me the world shall commit, my words
when they speak me, my thoughts when they think me,
my treason engendered by traitors beyond me,
my life when they murder by means of my
hands, my death when they live me.

all these bad things that are done in this world are not from human being at all..they are done be the abused being of what was called human being..humans do love..do feel..do cure..do heal..do help....these creatures do hate ..do kill..do hurt...do anything but feeling others...if I hate any one..then it is not me..it is the black soul that you planted it in me..if i kill then it is not me ..it is the stone that you put it instead of my heart..you people killed me in away that makes me dead while i'm killing and hating and destroying the world...

I am not yet born; rehearse me
In the parts I must play and the cues I must take when
old men lecture me, bureaucrats hector me, mountains
frown at me, lovers laugh at me, the white
waves call me to folly and the desert calls
me to doom and the beggar refuses
my gift and my children curse me.

please I do not want to walk your roads in life..i do not to repeat your lies..nor teach my kids to lie..they will discover our game soon..they will curse me for not leading them to the right way of life...

I am not yet born; O hear me,
Let not the man who is beast or who thinks he is God
come near me.

lend me your ears for seconds please..i want to be away from that one who think he is god...anything stand in my way to have a real faith in the real God..i do not want to be deceived by satan ...i do not want to face any one who may change my pure true faith in God...

I am not yet born; O fill me
With strength against those who would freeze my
humanity, would dragoon me into a lethal automaton,
would make me a cog in a machine, a thing with
one face, a thing, and against all those
who would dissipate my entirety, would
blow me like thistledown hither and
thither or hither and thither
like water held in the
hands would spill me.

the world I'm going to live in has many people who abuse this pure life..this lovely world..and this kind humanity ..they hate each other..they cause wars...they tell lies..they blacken the shiny white world..they

Let them not make me a stone and let them not spill me.
Otherwise kill me

O' please never let me involved i such sad mad world..I'm a human being and if i live in this world i'm going to be as stone not as a human being with heart and feelings..we are not too late if you can do what i ask you..simply kill me..like any victim you have killed before..

This poem is describing the inner conflict of the speaker. we see in the 1st stanza :
I am not yet born; O hear me.
Let not the bloodsucking bat or the rat or the stoat or the
club-footed ghoul come near me.

that he is describing the government as " bloodsucking bat or the rat or the stoat or the
club-footed ghoul "
which shows the weakness and the fear that he feels

I fear that the human race may with tall walls wall me,
with strong drugs dope me, with wise lies lure me,
on black racks rack me, in blood-baths roll me.

he also fears that he will lose his freedom and his identity in this world, fears that he won't be able to be as he once was before this war.

provide me
With water to dandle me, grass to grow for me, trees to talk
to me, sky to sing to me, birds and a white light
in the back of my mind to guide me
.

in the above lines we see that he is begging for human contact, to be heard and seen, to be human again.

forgive me
For the sins that in me the world shall commit

he ask for forgiveness for the sins that he did it during the war.

rehearse me
In the parts I must play and the cues I must take when
old men lecture me, bureaucrats hector me, mountains
frown at me, lovers laugh at me, the white
waves call me to folly and the desert calls
me to doom and the beggar refuses
my gift and my children curse me.

he feel as he is a character in a play that has no control on the story, forced to continue acting, character that lovers laugh at, children curse it, as if it's useless and merely a joke.

Let not the man who is beast or who thinks he is God
come near me

he asks to be away from those men who wants to control him.

after that he asks for strength against the government to stay a human and not to be a controlled toy that kills for them (a lethal automaton )

and in the last stanza he express his last wish that they help him to be a human or if it doesn't work kill him.

(in the whole poem his only wish to be a human again or end his misery by killing him).

Best regards, Ahlam Al-Otaibi

The poet opens his poem with a very strong image which is unborn baby. He uses this image to show his fear and worries about the world around him. In the first stanza he uses animal images which implies killing and use these images foreshadow the damage human can cause. Then in the following stanza he talks about how certain people control the rest of the humanity. The image of "tall walls" refers to the means these people used to separate humans from each other such as race, nationality and class. Also, he talks about how group of people brain wash the rest with white lies and cause "blood – baths". In the third stanza he express the solution to the evils that mentioned in the second stanza and he knows that the creator has to guide him. Next stanza is less hopeful and the poet asking his creator to forgive him for the future evils he will forced to commit. But the following stanza provides the solution to these evils. He believes that his God can give him tools to stand against all these pressures. Then he asks his God to give his enough strength to stand against these people who either act like animal or like God. The most important image in this poem is, "a lethal automaton"- robot and he believes these external powers will turn peoples into robots and program them to commit evils. At the end of his poem, he finishes his prayer in a shocking way by asking his creator to kill him if he will not be protected from these men made evils.

The tone of this poem is disappointed and pessimistic because of the Second World War.

Salam,
Here is my comment:
"Prayer before Birth"

Louis MacNeice expresses his thoughts and feelings toward war and its effects through a voice of unborn child which is a catchy and sensitive way to point out that the close war is a wrong and destructive decision. The poem begins with the child asking God to hear him and to protect him from the dangerous and bloodsucking creatures. Then, he asks God to save him from the things the human race will do to him such as drugs, lies, black racks and the blood-baths they might roll him in. The second stanza shows that the unborn child is aware that he will be born in a bad time, a time where no one cares for the other, a time where one human being will kill another human being just for some materialistic stuff and for the fake, false and unjustified glory. After that, he asks God to provide him with the perfect, suitable and healthy environment to grow up in. Also, he asks him for a white light to guide him through the upcoming events and obstacles he will face. Next, the speaker asks God to forgive him for his sins, words, thoughts, treason, life and death although those sins is not committed by him, they are the sins of the world. In the fifth stanza, the speaker asks God to train him for the parts he will play through his life, to tell him what to do during everything he may face in life and to stay with him as long as he is alive. In addition, he asks him not to let any ignorant person who thinks he is strong and powerful takes control over him and rule him. Finally, the speaker asks God to give him the strength to stand up against those who will take away his humanity, dignity and pride or he asks God to simply kill him.

I agree with Ruba that this poem fits in with the current events around the world. The young generations are facing those hard times especially in Palestine.

PostSubject: analyze   Fri Apr 30, 2010 6:30 am

The poem is mere reflection of the chaos in the world through Second World War. As afraid child the speaker ask God to hear him:"let not the blood sucking bat or the rat or stoat or the club-footed ghoul come near him." the child(speaker)feels all of these things refer to death, bad luck, fear, anarchy, destruction, no safe there. How the human can cause the pain I can see all of that and I am not yet born with the blood round me although I have a glance of optimism in my mind there are a good things in a life so my God provide me. "The water dance to me" the water for to be clear and dance for enjoyment and simply "grass to grow for me" it means world become empty from difficulty "trees talk to me" there are no limitation between humans "sky to sing to me " a life is sweet and so on. My God I know like any human in a world I will do sins and treason that engendered by traitors beyond me this is what will happen if I see a life so forgive me. I don't know I see that or this is what will happen how e world like a play the actors are mountains, lovers to ridicule from the love, the beggar become to be high refuses gift… my God don't let the man who see himself a greatest and be hard with the feeble people come near me. And give me a power to be strong man to safe myself against those who would freeze my humanity and make me lethal automaton that kill people without clemency and don't let them make me without feelings, humanity, kind like stone otherwise kill me my God I don't care or don't me born her I am secure. We find the speaker uses a lot of figures literature that give a nice sensibility to the poem "the water dance", "trees to talk", " sky to sing", "mountains frown at me", "waves, desert call" are personification. In fact, the speaker is creator I have lived horror fiction through the first stanza, and bright fiction in third stanza.
Notice; during the analyze I put myself in the speaker's place and I took allowance him.

The poem Prayer before Birth was written by Louis MacNeice. The title of this poem speaks hope and wishes from innocents children how have not been porn yet. It is a message from those none porn children to the world to show fear from the war. The poem tells us their wishes to stop it because it will make no better life for people. All it brings to the world is destroying, killing, and hating. In my opinion leaders cause war for their personal needs or personal hate. The biggest problem is that they get everybody involved in it. Innocent people pay for those leaders stupid decisions. Leaders of the world must stop what they are doing because it never affects them, it always affects the people. They never carried a gun and went with the soldier. All they have to do is giving orders. Very Happy Very Happy Smile :

The child who knew and hear every thing about the world before he is born. The child who dos not want to come to this world. Because, the injustice and barbarity in the Second World. Next is the fear of being closed in by lies and persuasion, being led by drugs, tortured both mentally and physically, and being made to participate in warfare and other massacres. Then, the poet makes a plea for the good things of life which today are fast disappearing: clean water, love, forests, birds and purity ("white light") as a guide. After that, the child asks for forgiveness for all the sins that the world is going to make him commit in the future. His final plea is that his heart may not turn to stone, or his life be wasted. The child who knew and hear every thing about the world before he is born,he want us to ask protect from God, he asked forgiveness for all have sinned in this world and we know that we overcome all the obstacle and trials that come in our life.i think this poem as a message to the all people to live in peace together.
All people need to pray, especially those living in the problems. The tone of this poem is disappointed and pessimistic because of the Second World War.and me agree with Ruba & Abeer that this poem fits in with the current events around the world. The young generations are facing those hard times especially in Palestine.

i hope U like it miss Embarassed
