Also her daughter's skin is like a flower while hers is dry and pale . she also notices that her chances of having hew baby that an less than her daughter becomes of Their ages. Finally, as the poet says at the end that its story of replacement one day the daughter will 35 years old just like her mother child .I think that the sociological state of the mother being at 35.makes her mentions the biological state of her so life is just a sacral and number of states we all game experience . |

| Hi everyone This is my comment
The speker is a mother brushing her daughter's hair. While she doing this, infront of the mirror, an old story appears. The mother notes the diffrences between her and her daughter. She starts to discribe her daughter's hair"brown silken hair" which refer to youth, beauty and new life.On the other side, her grey hair that is symbol of old, weakness and a years of a life pass away. A new generation will take her place and all the women in the same age. Then, she notes her furrow, dry skin and the young girl skin. So soft, damp and strong. She discribes this age, how it is so difficalt and hard to be on it.You will see how weak are you, like a flower spend along time without careing. But to be like her daughter's age, look like a bud of rose appears to be opening. Full of life, beauty and energy.
Then, she looks at the doughter's body as "a full purse of eggs", that can hold her to have a child, two or three and even more."I brush her tangled fargrant hair at bedtime", the mother backs to her daughter's hair and know that the old story is about 'replacement'.A story that all of us will be part of it one day.I hope you like it miss ,,

| Sharon olds' poem "35/10" which about a very typical scene for any mother when she sees her daughter is growing up. in the narrative poem "35/10" the speaker is the mother and she is also the author and the title which is simply represent the age the mother is 35 and her daughter is 10 .the mother started to describe something she has done it for long time but this time was completely different because she noticed the differences between her and her daughter. She was wandering why whenever her daughter is blooming; she is wilting more and more. We can see that by focusing on the words she used to describe her daughter such as "while silken, flower…", and how she described herself by using words like"gray, silver and dry pitting". These words could imagery of the same image that the mother saw in the mirror to showed us the huge differences between two of them. In the end, she realized the fact of every night brings a new day, the fact of replacement .also, and all that differences she had seen to prove the fact that her daughter is replacing her. | |

| "Sharon Olds", a modern American poet who was born in 1942.Olds's poetry is known by her style of exprssing intense emotions with a very emotive simple language. Her work is also known by the use of direct free verse style. Her poems often discusses topics concerning her family life, children, and her relationship with her parents. All these features of olds's writing are clearly appeared in her poem "35/10" . The persona in this poem is a mother at 35 begins to feel her age, realizing that while she is about to fulfill her role as a mother, her daughter is blossoming into this role. She is becoming aware of the changes that suddenly appeared in her appearance, while she is seeing ,in front of her eyes, her daughter reaching a tender age.She realizes that she is aging considerably through the physical differences between her and her daughter. She describes her daughter's smooth brown hair, whereas her hair went grey. She is wondering why is it just as life goes on, it negatively affects her appearance, bringing age changes into her skin. She compares her dry skin that begins to wrinkle to her daughter's moist soft skin. She also sees the changes in her daughter's body which reminds her of her inability to bear a child. She is feeling sad that she is about to fulfill her role as a child-bearer and she might not be able to do it again, even if she wants to.Her slight chances for child-bearing are reducing through the falling of her skin. Her time for chlid-bearing has now past and became the role of her daughter. She mentioned that the number of her opportunities to make new babies diminishes as her reproductive cells decrease,by getting close to the menopause. On the other hand, her daughter's eggs are increasing dramatically while she is growing up.At the end,she remembers this story of daughters replacing their mothers whenever she brushes her daughter's hair at bedtime. This poem is expressed in a clear language, discussing a simple subject. The frequent use of imagery is clearly appeared in this poem.It is full of visual images,as it is shown in '' brown, grey hair" ,"the fold in my neck" as well as the tactile images as in "silken","dry", and so on.The colorful events pf the poem are presented using images that cut quickly from the beautiful attractive images to the daunting ones. In my opinion, the poem"35/10" indicates that everyone has a role either to be developed, fulfilled, exchanged or simply replaced through lifespan. The role of the mother here is developed and became a role of another person,as we see a daughter taking her mother's role. This poem also indecates ,with a sense of sadness, lifesycle in which a daughter of today will be a mother of tomorrow. That's all, Hope it measures up your interests. | |

| "35/10" by Sharon Olds’ is a narrative poem. Sharon Olds’ wrote a beautiful ideas about losing youth in this poem."35/10" is a comparison poem of a doughter coming of age and a mother who is leaving that time behind.
We can figure out from the titel what the boem is about. It represents the ages, the mother become 35 and the daughter in 10. In the beginning she tell us the difference between the mother and daughter. Words such as gray, silver, dry pitting, and dud represents the mother, while silken, flower, full, and round represent the daughter. She is comparing herself in 35 aginst her daughter in 10. Then, when she said "the silver-haired servant" she wishes she was not the sevant, but the served. It also shows her power and her youth that is becom down and her daughter’s power and youth in the beginning. “Why is it/ just as we begin to go/ they begin to arrive.” then she is jealous that as her doughter is coming of age and is starting to develop that beauty. Silken, pale, flower, full, and round describe the daughter. In the same time she is in middle age going to lose every thing. She also shows her jealousy by describing her eggs as, "falling through my body, duds among them". While her daughter has,"her full purse of eggs, round and/firm as hard-boiled yolks" that tell us that the daughter is strong and powerful, while the mother is fragile and weak. At the end when she said, "It’s an old/story/the oldest we have on our planet../the story of replacement" she give us about the continuous life process, which starts at birth and ends at death.
Finelly, we should notice the 18 line, as the age 18 is the prime of one's youth.

| Good afternoon In this emotional poem, a mother is talking about her daughter's "brown silken hair", beautiful body and her young age . She is simply showing us the difference between them. Words such as "grey" and "silver" express the strong pain of getting older watching someone is actually younger and more beautiful. The mother keeps lamenting that her life is over as her daughter's life begins. She is too sad to accept the truth . This poem also shows us something important about women's thoughts at that time. In 1982, Women actually do not like the fact they are having their children at later age, losing opportunity of growing happily with them. (F)

| Analysis of “35/10” by Sharon Olds In this poem 35/10 by Sharon Olds .The speaker is a mother who is trying to express her feelings about her daughter .And she realizes that her daughter is replacing her. .The title refers to their ages, the speaker is a thirty-five years old and her daughter is ten years old. When the speaker says “brown silken” (1-2) about her daughter, and she calls herself “grey gleaming “(3) shows the speaker is jealous from her daughter, depressed and low self esteem. Because the daughter is younger, beautiful and full of life .But in the other side the speaker is old, aging and slowly dying. The speaker calls herself “silver-haired servant behind her” (4) pointing that when she was younger and beautiful .She was not the servant, but the served. And here it indicates a sense of self-awareness in the speaker. The term silver-haired usually represents old age and the term brown silken usually represent youth. Here the speaker” Why is it/ begin to arrive” (4-6) asks for an explanation why she is turning old while her daughter is growing to be more beautiful. When the speaker describes “fold in my neck/ fine bones of her/ hips sharpen/ dry pitting/ a moist/”(6-9) shows jealousy that they are different in appearance .The mother is old, aging, wilt and used .But the daughter is young, pretty and growing up to be an attractive woman. The word moist is referring to youthfulness and the word dry is referring to old age. The speaker further shows her jealousy when she describes herself as a cactus that old, dry and ugly plant .Which still have “precise flower on the tip” (10) indicating that her daughter is the flower .Here the speaker feels ugly and despicable, and in the other hand her daughter is the pretty part because she gave birth of that young, charming girl. The speaker is weak and exhausted when she said “falling through my body/ duds among them” while her daughter is strong and healthy “full purse of eggs/ hard-boiled yolks” (12-14). The jealousy disappears when the speaker said”. It’s an old story—the oldest we have on our planet/ the story of replacement” (15-18) because she realizes that her daughter is replacing her. And the aging is part of the life process. She understands that every stage of life has its changes. And her daughter will grow up and create a new life, as the speaker did ten years ago. | the peom is anarrative peom which represents the movement bitween ages . That is clearly showen from the title and the compering bitween the mother and her doughter. She looks at her doughter and and thinks why she blooms while she begin to wilt. The language emphasize the difference between the mother and daughter. such as as gray, silver, dry pitting, and dud represents the mother, while silken, flower, full, and round represent the daughter. That's help us to relyize the difference bitween them. The poem contains 18 lines which also may may symbolize youth, as the age 18 is the prime of one’s youth. | |

| Sharon Olds imagine by this poem the difference between the tow generations, the generation of the mother who combs her daughter's hair and the generation of the daughter. Through the description of " daughter's brown silken hair " is ametaphore of her daughter's youth time. In the same moment the poet " see the grey gleaming on my head " which is metaphor of her weakness time. In the poem, the poet describes her body marks which show the time passing in the verse " tip of cactus " now she is thinking how can bring a baby. All these idea was passing in the mother's mind. The last verses " the story of replacement " is the thesis of the poem. |

| Sharon old spoke about how to take care of her daughter ,to protect her just like a flower that no one allow her to pick anyone and put a shelter to protect her, just like what done before of the servant of her mother. No one can compare the love, care, and sharing of mother and daughter’s relationship.
In this poem there is two characteres a mother and her daughter, the mother is 35 years old and her daughter is 10 years old I discovered this from the title 35/10. The mother here is the speaker. She show us how beauty is her daughter. She wants to protect her as her mother protected her when she was a child. But now she was already a mother she wants to give her daughter a better future and as long she’s alive she want to protect her forever. She will give all love and care to her daughter. When she brush the hair of her daughter she remember all the things happened to her past and she knew that one day her daughter will be a mother like her .So however she wanted to be a perfect mother to her daughter. So, that will reflect to her daughter.

| May Allah Peace & Merciful Be Upon YouThis is what comes with me after reading the poem several times In the poem"3510", by Sharon Old, the speaker uses a wistful and jealous tones to send her feelings and emotions about her daughter`s age. Sharon is speaking directly to the audiance, she realizes in front of the mirror that as if womanhood door is closing for the 35 years mother and opening widely for her ten years daughter. The narrator shows when she starts noticing the appearance differences between them. The mirror reflects thierselves and the mother sees herself sadly as an old maid for her youthful daughter, here I think she wishes to be the served not the servant. Also, she wonders about the reality of life when she`s closer to her old age, her daughter is just at the beginning of youth. She feels her power is getting weak while her daughter`s is getting much more srtong. The poem shows her wistfulness for her diminishing youth, and it shows her sadness for her advanced years. She is demanding an explanation for why she must turn older. Now, she turned the tone into jealous . She is jealous as her daughter at the beginning of her youth, becoming more beautiful, the mother at her beginning middle age, becoming more wrinklier. She`s comparing her skin to her dayghter`s. Hers is dry and has marks as if life curved on her, while her daghter`s is dewy and silky. She further shows her jealousy by describing her eggs as, “falling through my body, duds among them” ,while her daughter has, “her full purse of eggs, round and /firm as hard-boiled yolks” . These phrases indicate that the daughter is strong and powerful, while the speaker is fragile and weak. The jealous tone disappears at the end, however, and the poem ends wistfully and resigned stating that, “It’s an old/story—the oldest we have on our planet--/the story of replacement” . The speaker realizes that aging is part of the continuous life process, which starts at birth and ends at death. She knows that eventually her daughter will replace her and that the life process will continue to repeat itself for generations to come. The imagery in the poem “35/10” also sends the speaker’s wistfulness and jealousy for her daughter’s youth. The speaker uses for her daughter "brownsilken hair" and for herself "gleaming grey". The use of the colors emphasizes the difference between the mother and her daughter at the start of the poem. The color silver indicates old age while the brown silken indicate youth. The visual imagery used here. Also, The speaker describes her daughter as, “a moist/ precise flower on the tip of a cactus” while she says, “my skin shows/ its dry pitting” . These words give us an image of the daughter as blooming and new, whereas the speaker is wilting and old. The word "moist" indicates youthfulness and the word "dry" indicates old age. The speaker’s use of the contrasting words moist and dry also enable us to use visual sense to imagine the physical differences between the daughter and the speaker. Finally, the word" before the mirror" she realizes that her daughter will replace her.P.s:
I think the use of grey hair is an exaggeration when the speaker is in her thirties.. I hope you all hppiness in all the phases of your lives. That`s what can I say, But I really like this poem.
Thanks a lot Mrs. Ohoud.
