Mar7ba,

How are you all?

Here's my analysis for the poem:

"Hope is the thing with feathers" is a poem written by Emily Dickinson. The speaker describes hope as a bird in a metaphorical way which indicates that hope can take us far away in our lives by being optimistic. Also, the speaker shows the power of hope and describes it as a fluffy and friendly feeling which can uplift our souls. When we face difficulties in life that can bring us down, hope is our only friend that will encourage us to keep moving forward no matter what happens. In the last stanza, the speaker talks about how universal hope is. It can be found in different places and situations.

Hope is a Thing With Feathers is a poem written by Emily Dickinson. The speaker defines hope with a metaphor, comparing it to a bird. Dickinson introduces her metaphor in the first two lines, “Hope is the thing with feathers/That perches in the soul.” Throughout the entire poem, this metaphor develops through Dickinson’s comparison of characteristics between hope and a bird, whatever is being said of the bird applies to hope, and the application to hope is Dickinson's point in this poem. It is obvious that a bird “sings the tune,” but Emily’s version of a bird, “sings a tune—without the words, and never stops at all.” In the soul where this bird has perched on, sings wordlessly and without pause. Like the bird, hope comes from one’s soul, and “never stops at all,” meaning that an individual does not stop hoping. Like the tune without words, hope also is not a matter of words. It is a feeling about the future both of desire and expectation.
The development of this metaphor continues as Dickinson describes how the bird reacts to hardships. A storm must be impossibly brutal to “abash the little bird.” The bird continues to survive as it can be found everywhere. Finally, the “chillest land” to the “strangest sea,” symbolizes hope’s presence under the worst and most threatening circumstances.

The poem "Hope is the Thing with Feathers" is by Emily Dickinson. The speaker talkes about the hope and freedome in this life. He compare him self as a bird. And the bird is full of hope and he can fly every where with the hope inside his soul. The only thing which make him happy is hope, because he can not live with out hope or he will die. Hope can make you optimistic, self confident and love. If the person live with out hope his life become boring and empty. So, he should be smart and full of hope to be happy and successful in his life.

Hope is the thing with feather's is written by EMILY DICKINSON. The speaker tells everybody not to loose hope. We know that every human being has a problem but they never quit. Because this just only a trial that God gave us. And he know that we can solve it even it is very hard for us. And we know that everyday we face a difficult things, but we overcome all the consequences that comes in our life. And always be positive every time you face the hard thing. No one doesn't want to have a problem in his life, because in this world nobody's perfect. In fact, the sound of birds singing renews many people scene of possibility and wonder. When people hear a bird to continue to sing even during fierce winds. It is comforting to know that this brave little creatures are not afraid. Like hope the birds courage and perseverance is heartening. Like the birds "HOPE" kept so many warm by offering a way to look beyond the harsh reality to the promise of something better to come. HOPE is a joyous gift with no condition or string attached to it. And if there is a way there is a will..!

In this poem Emily Dickinson takes an idea or feeling – hope and describes it through a physical image bird. This metaphor shows in the whole poem. In the first stanza, she uses "the thing with feathers" instead of saying hope is a bird. However, the word feathers could mean several things: very light, easy to fly away and easy to move around. The tone of this stanza is very peaceful and cheerful and the second stanza is completely the opposite. The image of the storm takes away the peace and comfort which shows in the first stanza. She says that the bird always sings even if the is a storm he will continues sings his sweet song and brings the warmth to many souls. This stanza could mean that as long as we have hope, we can overcome many difficulties in our life. In the last stanza the poet is going to talk about her experience and haw hope helped her. The images of the "chilliest land" and "the strangest sea" refer to these difficult which she had to face. She says that the hope stays and helps us when we are suffering and does not ask for anything. Finally, the poet uses these images to help us understand the meaning of hope because it is important in our lives.

WELCOME I love you

Whenever you got struggled or disappointed or in the top of sadness because of loosing someone who was so dear to your heart, there would be such things make you dream with good, with bright future is coming soon.

There must be something says" it will be ok", drawing a cute smile on your face then. It's the hope that all creatures live for. In the poem "Hope Is the Thing With Feathers" the poet tries to give the meaning of the hope in bird's picture. The soul that your body carries keeps listenning carefully to the tones of the hope. In spite of the words absence, doesn't even want it to stop. What a pretty charm makes you go on !

P.S
my Ruba Smile

you think that "The thing with feathers" describes freedom better than hope, I would agree with you on this plus I guess the birds, feathers and wings are things remind you with pure spirits and spiritual things. would you agree dear friends?

good evening Smile

I like hope and everyone do . Hope is the long way full of
ambitious future . It is the smile of life and no one has the
right to take that from any creature .

In this poem "Hope" is the thing with feathers by Emily
Dickinson, the speaker describes the hope with feathers
like a bird, can fly anywhere. It could be taken down so
easily like hope but stays strong and never goes away.
In stanza 2 the speaker tells us why is hope "sweetest"
during a storm ! why do we need hope when things are
well or when they are bad . "I've heard it in the chillest
lands," Dickinson here offers another reason to have
hope. She tells us that hope exists for everyone
and everything.

* I agree WITH Ruba and Moneirah that this poem may
describes freedom better than hop because birds
are the symbol of freedom and peace in this world .

Hi,
This is my comment.

“Hope is the Thing With Feathers,” by Emily Dickinson. The speaker describes a hope as a bird ( a metaphor).Feathers represent hope because feathers enable you to fly and a new beginning of our life. “That perches in the soul,” the speaker uses a bird to describe hope and people should have optimistic in their life. She is implying perches in our soul. The soul is a center of hope. The speaker uses a bird’s song to refer hope. Birds never stop sing of hope. “And sweetest in the gale is heard” she describes the bird’s song of hope as sweetest in the wind. In the last stanza the speaker shows her difficult time which she face her and haw hope helped her. The images of the "chilliest land" and "the strangest sea" refer to this difficult time. The speaker uses these images to know what the hope is. Because it is importance in our lives.

The poem "Hope Is the Thing with Feather" by Emily Dickinson talks about the wishes. The speaker dreams with a freedom. He imagines if he was a bird with a lot of feathers. The feathers that fill all his body like a real bird. Also he has a nice voice like a birdcall. It can make you understand what he feels without say any word. Because his song is look like as sweet tones.

And sweetest in the gale is heard;
And sore must be the storm
That could abash the little bird
That kept so many warm.

The best song of this bird you can hear when the gentle wind blows. But the painful of that when the storm is covered that a festal sound. Also, this is imagery. The speaker describes his feeling in both cases: anger and calmness. The storm explains his wrathful feeling. So, he will be a shy bird when his acts become not good. The gentle wind explains his feeling when he becomes relax, and his speech will look like a beautiful songs.

I've heard it in the chilliest land
And on the strangest sea;
Yet, never, in extremity,
It asked a crumb of me.

Finally, the bird could fly far away, and his song will hear in everywhere. Even in the more distant of the wintry lands and the excited sea, and asked for loaf of bread.

" hope is the thing with feathers" by Emily Dickinson expresses alot of meanings in the first stanza the speaker defines the hope with metaphor comparing it to a bird because the bird is fluffy and friendly feeling in all of us. "preches in the soul" hope is like bird comes from one's soul. Also, the speaker calls for the optimisticsense, " sings the tune without words" hope is universal when talks about birds songs without words , hope is common to all people and all times and expresses meaning the individual does not stop hoping like the tune without words. In addition, hope is not matter of words, it is a feeling about the future both of desire and expectation. The followings stanzas " sore must be the storm" describs how the bird reacts to hardships the storm not " abash the little bird" the bird continues to the survive as it can be found every where , also" chilliest land" and "stangest sea" symbolize hope's presence under the worst and threatening situations .

4th Assignment - Page 2 Empty
PostSubject: Re: 4th Assignment   4th Assignment - Page 2 EmptyThu May 20, 2010 5:10 am

Hello all,
this is my comment Smile

Emily Dickinson defines and explains the feeling of hope by comparing it to a bird, in the form of a metaphor, "a thing with feather." Hope is a "thing" because it is a feeling; this feeling is like a bird. This bird ( hope ) fly and settles on the top of our souls to dominate the soul. Also, it sings in order to spread optimisim and happiness, but without words because it is a feeling which consists of desire and expectation with no end.

On the face of strong wind and harsh storm, the singing voice of the bird is sweet; sometimes, it could be confused and ashamed by the storm but at the end it keeps many warm. This idea means that hope can always prevail in the face of desperation, even if it became in some moment a little confused.

Like a free bird, hope can fly fast to the darkest, most scareful and farthest parts of the world; it is not unable or helpless and cannot ask for help. Hope gives, but does not take.

To Sara Al-Khezzi,
Your commentary is very good but I think you have some misunderstanding. The speaker likens hope as a bird in order to express and describe the power and strength of hope. But you mean that the bird stands for people and this is not true.

To Monera Al-Otaibi, Monera Al-Hntoosh, and Hala Al-Turki,

Your commentary is good but the bird is referring to hope, so hope will not make the bird warm. Second, I think it is wrong idea chilliest land and the strangest sea make the speaker hopeful. Actually, when the speaker used the chilliest land and strangest sea to show how far hope can go to help.

To Ruba Al-Hebs,
The commentary is marvelous. But there is something that I think is wrong. The sore of the storm refers to difficults and problems of the life which can affect hope little, and so they does not make us feel secure or warm.

That's all, flower

This poem Hope is the Thing with Feathers written By Emily Dickinson.
It is about hope and how to be optimistic in life. in the first stanza the speaker compare hope to bird because the bird is free it can fly and go to everywhere. Here the speaker use personification when he use the word " feathers" . Also there is personification in:
And sings the tune without the words""
He compare birds to the human because the human can sigs but not birds
Second stanza is opposite the first one because he mention the difficult time and how the hope will help you to faces the difficult time and hard situation
In the last stanza the speaker tells that he heard that bird's sings in everywhere and in every cases and this birds asked him crumb from his hope.

Also I agree with" Ruba "and "ohoud" that this poem may

4th Assignment - Page 2 Empty
PostSubject: Re: 4th Assignment   4th Assignment - Page 2 EmptyThu May 20, 2010 8:44 am

Salam sunny ,

What motivates people to live, to improve. It is the most precious thing all humans have, but they differ in using it, if they`re preserve or destroy it. This what Emily Dickenson tries to convey in her poem “Hope is the thing with feather”. In the first stanza Dickenson defines hope as “ a thing with feather” , we know that birds are the only creatures have feather, thus there is a metaphor. Hope is just like a bird which flies up towards heaven, and this is the same to our souls when they full with hope; it makes us as we`re not on the ground, we reach the heaven. Also, hope sings as birds too , but the only different here is that birds we can hear them, anyone can hear their songs, hope is the you the only one hear the beautiful song, it`s inside your body the song makes the words fail to describe. Another thing special with hope songs, they`re endless, singing for you all the time through your life it`s bonded with our souls, nothing can stop it unless you yourself kill that feeling.

In the second stanza, the speaker sheds the light on hope effects through life situations. The speaker says, the sound of hope is unique, you can hear it everywhere you go, any struggle you face. It is there singing for you the song of life whether the obstacle is harmful or hard to bear, just there hope emerges for us to resist to fight the situations life throws at us. On the other hand, the second type of people those who can`t stand against life obstacles they fail immediately and clip the wings of that sweetest little bird (hope) and encage it. The word “storm” is metaphor of life obstacles and struggles we face.

In the last stanza, the speaker offers many places which hope is still there not moving. If you are in a situation the least expected hope comes to you and fills you heart, sustains you with power and strength. This will happen in greatest challenge times, hope gives us warm and comfort, it`s loyal and faithful actually it`s a treasure all humans have. This treasure never asks for anything in return, even a “crumb” and here the speaker uses the word” crumb “which is a tiny pieces of bread, to continue the image of the bird.

Hope is a free gift inside us, exists for all humans.Even if you crush it, it will come back, it never let you down, just take care of it and you will be satisfied with your life.

*To Ruba and Ohoud and others:

Though I agree with you that bird is generally a symbol of freedom, Dickenson uses bird as a symbol of hope to show the similarities between them. Both of them fly towards heaven, may be hope can reach over heaven. Also, both can fly away and come back and both sing regardless the difference between songs. So, I think here “bird” is perfect to express the feeling of hope and successfully she does.

* Manal: great comments I do enjoy reading yours cheers .

"Without hope the heart would break"

Wish you all a life full with hope flower
